Cabins are filling and the campground is booking up... reserve before its too late!

HI everyone! Please share this with anyone related to us or would be appropriate to invite to the reunion. We know not everyone is getting contacted via this computer method and the more help to contact people the better. Whether you plan to attend or not, we need to let family know.

Do you have contact with Alberta family members who may not have been contacted? Saskatchewan relations? Do you have names, numbers or emails you can share to Chad or Trish so that they can contact and disseminate information? Have you contacted people and you can let Chad & Trish know so they are aware of it?

My job is to help share info via the web, email, blog and FB but I don't have many contacts, so really tough to do. I will also email this same message to anyone I have on email. Which is not very many people. Not everyone can make it but we can try to let everyone know. Chad and Trish are the coordinators please contact them with any info.

You can find them via info on blog or Trish on FB. Also, the campground is also booking up and there is maybe one cabin left but only limited nights so if interested PLEASE contact the resort to book, you can always cancel. Have a great day, my job here is done! Take care.

Winter weather makes me dream of summer!

Sarah's house Feb. 2015 Storm #3
Here we are, in the latter half of February and I watch as coast to coast the weather is reported. In the Maritimes we are still shoveling out of record snow falls, 4 storms in 2 weeks and 3-7 feet of snow in the dooryard depending on where you live. Fortunately the last two have not hit me as hard in New Brunswick as some of the coastal areas, but the winds and cold, BRRR! I am looking forward to warmer weather!

Of course my friends, relatives and my daughter are all only too happy to tell me about the weather in BC and parts of Southern Alberta that is hitting the low to mid teens in temperature as I battle with -20 to -30C. OK I know those of you in Northern Alberta feel my pain! However, as we shovel out and bundle up and I listen to people tell me about weeding the garden and mowing the lawn and walking on the beach, I will admit, this does not bring my most charitable thoughts to mind! I don't begrudge it though, life is good to me here (albeit freaking cold!)

So, mid February means we are getting closer to the family reunion time. Chad tells me that the resort is booking up and that camping and cabin space need to get reserved ASAP. Remember, if you THINK you are coming, please reserve your spot, you can always cancel it with 14 days notice. It is better to "Be Prepared" as the Brownies and Boy Scouts say, then to get caught in the cold without any options. (As of this minute there is only 1 cabin left for the weekend of the 29th - but the days before/after there is flexibility - so depending on the dates of travel there may still be options. AND there are still lots of campsites available!)

Chad recently posted this great video of  a pod of Orcas (Killer Whales) that he saw off the coast of the island - check it out. He also has several videos on YouTube under the name "A Fine Looking Gentleman" and you can see more of the beauty of the area.

Angie and Oscar
Have questions, concerns or ideas? Contact Trish or Chad as the event coordinators. I have to say right now, late August BC weather is incredibly appealing to me! Well, time to put more wood in the fire, put on my heavy clothes and start my day!

Angie circa 1970's (Still a cutie today!)
Reunions - time to make memories - pictures of Angie - then and now! Remember the resort IS pet and kid friendly! AND YES Angie has her cabin booked! See you there!

Have a great day everyone!

Giesbrecht Family Memories.... from Sarah's perspective

1967 Ferry Ad - not BC Ferry
Wow! Looks like Chad got us a great rate to head to from Nanaimo to Vancouver return for the family reunion! Ok, this might have been an ad from 1967 but I found it very interesting since my family moved from Fort MacMurray, Alberta to Port Alberni, BC in 1969. I am sure a car and passengers was a little more than $3.50 though.

My dad, Klaas Giesbrecht, eldest child of Abram and Justina moved with his wife Karon and two young children, Owen and Sarah (me) in 1969 shortly before my 3rd birthday. He decided to try life in BC and as he moved family followed.

Peter & Karen
A few years later his brother Dave moved and raised his family with wife Marion and two sons Davie and Jamie. Youngest son, Peter came several years later and met the love of his life, Karen, married and raised their daughters, Trisha and Crystal - all in Port Alberni. The Giesbrecht migration had begun!

I remember over the years, driving in the early morning to Victoria, BC to pick up Grandma and Grandpa at the airport or at the ferry terminal in Nanaimo. Back then the BC Ferry had full service restaurants with waitresses. A memory that comes to mind, I must have been about 4 or so, not even sure if Chad had been born yet. Unlike now, kids did not get go to restaurants very often so it was a big deal to be sitting on the ferry in the restaurant, with my family and grandparents. Grandma had on a big blackish/brown fur coat, it may have been faux fur, I am not sure, I just remember her wrapped up in it. Grandpa was dressed for travelling in his pants, suspenders, dress shirt and fedora.

Klaas, Owen & Sarah 1966
We all sat at the table, the waitress taking the order and Dad telling her what I would have. He ordered me "hot cakes". I was so excited! It was morning, we were on the ferry, on an adventure and I got to have HOT cake for breakfast! I couldn't wait for our food to be served! Finally, the food arrived and she handed everyone their plates, my eyes as big as saucers with anticipation, I am sure! Then, she placed my plate down with 3 steaming hot pancakes with big chunks of butter melting on them, hot syrup on the table. My face fell! Where were my HOT CAKES???? I knew better than to complain, we didn't go out much and there was no way I could be disrespectful in front of my grandparents, but my disappointment was evident. Dad, looked at me and said "Sally, what's wrong?" Softly I replied, "Nothing..... " Him again, "What's the problem?" Me still quiet but my voice rising, "Nothing, but I thought I was having HOT cakes?" He laughed! Grandma twittered, Grandpa even smiled. Dad said "Pancakes ARE hot cakes, it is just another name for them." Life lesson, hot cake is not a breakfast food but the pancakes were still really good.

Abe, Lynn, Angie & Wade
Over the years many family members traveled to the island. Terry, Annie's son, even spent some time staying with us when he was in his late teens. I will never forget his platform boots with the shiny flowery lining. Agnes and family all came to visit one summer and Dad took Doug fishing and the rest of us all spent hours on the boat on Sproat and Central lakes jumping into he water and swimming. Donna and Barb were just about out of high school then. Abe and family spent holidays with us and I recall the brothers all admiring motorbikes and buzzing around the property.  Much of the Giesbrecht family spent their years on Vancouver Island and area and there is much history there - Chad and Trish hope that family can make it out to the reunion so they can continue to share how the BC Giesbrecht's lived. Bill and Grace and family also came to the island one year if memory serves me correctly. Almost all made it at one point or another.

Dave, Klaas, Peter, Abe
Dad and Mom wanted us to know our family so every other summer or Christmas we traveled to Alberta and stayed for a few weeks. Our time was spent driving for hours from Coalhurst to Picture Butte to Pincher Creek to Lethbridge and out to Aunt Eva's farm. Owen spent many a night working with Doug and Aunt Eva's boys, out chicken catching on the farm for extra cash. During the days went they weren't chicken catching they were out hunting ground hogs - Chad got to help with that too. Although I am not too sure how much he enjoyed that. The long Alberta highways seemed so straight and endless to me, of course the highways weren't developed like today and we seemed to be on many secondary and tertiary roads - which was fun for me since I tended to get car sick.

Klaas, Karon, Owen, Sarah & Chad
Those trips allowed us to get to have relationships with Mom and Dad's family since so many were still in the general Southern Alberta area. Aunt Agnes hosted us and let us camp out almost every trip. I was always so glad to pull across the highway and train tracks into Coalhurst and pull onto her street. The trip was over!

Well, just a few family memories for me today. Does anyone else have thoughts they would like to share? Memories? How about the Family Reunion in 1976 I think - at the Eagle Crest campground in Saskatchewan... Please send in pictures, thoughts and memories to share with our family and remember if you click the link on the right hand side of the page to be added to the email you will automatically be added to the blog updates! Happy Saturday Everyone!

Lots of love, From Sarah aka Sally in New Brunswick

Fun and interesting facts and ideas about Gabriola Island...

Did you know?

That once you arrive at the reunion on Gabriola Island, BC you can easily spend the whole week never leaving the island? You can get all your needs easily met  with unique services and products right at your door step?
Yes! You can get fresh local produce at the farm market or farm gate for fresh local produce and eggs. You can purchase fresh locally roasted coffee! The island butcher is happy to work with you. There are numerous pubs and restaurants - casual and fine dining! Enjoy exploring local vineyards? Or organic tea houses?

Want to add a little culture to your vacation? Check out the museums and galleries on the island! Gabriola has a long and interesting history reaching back 40 million years! Head on over to the visitor centre for more ideas!

Are you an outdoor enthusiast? A world renowned golf course is a stones throw away! Ladies, want some time away? Explore your personal wellness options and while you are busy doing that send the boys out fishing! Fresh and Salt water fishing opportunities available! How does diving under the ocean sound? Or going up in a plane for a tour of the islands? How about going on a family hike? Or simply take it easy and relax on the gorgeous beaches!

So, those are a few of the links that can lead you to some of the interest and history that Gabriola Island has to offer! Now, here are a few words from Chad - as you can see Chad knows and loves the area and can't wait to share it with you all!

"Just trying to think of a few sights I could show relatives. Off the top of my head there's, Drumbeg Park almost next door, theres Malaspina Galleries, that's always a hit, there is Twin Beaches, it is two sandy beaches with a grassy area in between, there's Berry Point, its a good place to watch the ferries coming and going to and from mainland, its situated so you're looking right at Entrance Island lighthouse, its an excellent sunset, and I would imagine the Surf Pub will probably be open for business, its just before Berry Point, excellent sunset.
There's a museum, and there's a spot that I've located near the ferry terminal where the old millstones are piled up from years gone by, its kind of cool. There are a couple other sandy beaches to go to, some very large beaches in fact.

There's some small farms around the island, there's a rifle range, a golf course, in fact the golf course was a pretty big deal in its day, some world renown golf course designer was hired in the making of the facility. There are road side stands where you can buy organic produce and fresh eggs, not to mention the farmers market at Agi Hall on Saturday mornings, as well as weekend long art tours, and garden tours. Not sure if theres one for our scheduled timeframe.

Another enjoyable activity is to watch the tug boats moving log booms through the narrows. I usually watch them in False Narrows or Dodd Narrows, but Gabriola Pass is another spot to see this happen, and that's right close to our function. It's fun to watch as it's very tight quarters with a boom of logs varying in size. Sometimes it requires two or three boats. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it does not. Even more interesting in the summer when you throw some silly yachties into the mix. You can sit back and witness the near collisions and yelling that ensues. This all happens near slack tide for obvious reasons, and if there's no tug boats or log booms, there's often some pretty boats lined up to get through.

As far as commerce goes, Gabriola has a complete grocery store, Co-op gas station, BC Liquor Store, an excellent butcher shop, a few restaurants, pubs, building supply centre, medical clinic, drug store, real estate office, a few automotive shops, dentist office, bank, a veterinary clinic, and two fire departments.

And as far as artists go, you can't swing a cat without hitting a painter, sculpture, potter, jeweller, carver, glass fuser, or musician. And I have a friend that locally roasts and sells excellent coffee beans.

There is a fella with a dive lesson and charter business if there is anyone interested. Theres a ffishing charter business as well next door to our function. Theres a float plane business in the same bay as well with scheduled trips to the mainland. I think its about $80 each way. This is located just below the Sila Bay Pub, down on the fuel dock.
Theres a timber frame/log building school that you will see on your right hand side, just before you get to Pages Resort. There are kayak rentals and charters available. And a multitude of islands at hand to explore. There's a taxi service, and a community bus that comes around about every hour I think. Theres a good prawning site just outside of the bay.

And a popular fishing spot just a slight further called Thrasher Rock. Its well named. Its lovely in good weather, but you do not want to be there in bad weather. Its a reef about a mile long, and it can be quite treacherous. I did a rescue there one night about a year and a half ago. It took all night. Huge seas.

Anyway, I'm sure theres more, but this gives you a taste of what's in store. I honestly do not see any need for anything off island. But should we need to, its only a 20 minute ferry to Nanaimo. I hope you can make it to the reunion. Chad"

SO, remember, look at this reunion as a full fledged everything available nature vacation! Fun in the sun! Out on the ocean! Spas and beaches for rest and relaxation! And of course a whole lot of Giesbrecht going on! Hope to see you all there! Remember to book your spot today!

Planning stages for 2015 Family Reunion

Welcome to the Giesbrecht Family Reunion!
  Aug 28 to Sept 4, 2015

Chad Giesbrecht (son of Klaas Giesbrecht)  and Trish Giesbrecht Baird (daughter of Peter Giesbrecht) are both currently working on the 2015 family reunion. They are in the initial planning stages but in order to proceed or move forward they need this information shared with as many family members as possible.

Please take a moment to review this site or the Facebook Event page to learn more. There is a contact form to the right of the page as well as an email sign up sheet so that as we update the blog and planning, you can remain informed. Please share to any/all family members!

Christmas 1971
Abe, Justina and all
eight of their children
They have tentatively booked Pages Resort and Marina on Gabriola Island, BC - just off of Nanaimo, BC for the event. There are camp sites or cabins available. If you think you will be attending and need a site or cabin please advise them as soon as possible to hold the appropriate number of spaces. Note: Space can always be cancelled, up to the allowable time offered by the resort but if they get booked by other guests, you may miss out! EACH FAMILY MUST MAKE THEIR OWN RESERVATIONS but do indicate it is for the Giesbrecht Family Reunion. Thank you!

The family hails from the Abram Giesbrecht and Justina Peters family of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. The children from this family include: Klaas, Agnes, Eva , Bill, Dave , Abe , Annie and Peter Giesbrecht
4 of the 5 brothers
Dave, Klaas, Peter & Abe

Abram and Justina were married and lived in Saskatchewan for many years before moving to Alberta and the children lived across Alberta and British Columbia.

The remaining children in the family are Agnes, Abe, Eva and Peter. They are pre-deceased by their parents Abram and Justina and siblings, Klaas, Annie, Bill and Dave.

The last reunion was in the summer of 2007 in Picture Butte, Alberta, at which time we celebrated with an early 90th birthday for Grandma Justina Giesbrecht. It was wonderful to have so many family members together, including the
90th birthday 2007
Grandma and her children
Agnes, Klaas, Peter, Abe & Eva
immediate family listed above as well as some of Abe and Justina's family relations. We invite as many as would like to join us for an island summer reunion in 2015.

At the 2007 Reunion
Grandma Justina, Uncle Abe
and his children
Most recently the family joined together to celebrate the life of the eldest child, Klaas Giesbrecht who passed away on October 13, 2014. At that time we all realized how much we care about and miss each other and how we want to remain connected and strong as a family. As part of that committment, Chad and Trish decided to head a committee to plan a reunion, however, for the first time, the reunion would be held on the West Coast in British Columbia. Up until now there have been family reunions in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but they thought it would be fun to invite the prairie folk to enjoy life on the ocean for a few days.
Members of  Bill's,  Abe's and
 Klaas' family - October 2014

Grandma (Justina) funeral - January 2008
Eva, Agnes, Klaas, Peter & Abe
We know that everyone has to plan ahead and budget for this event so we want to give you plenty of opportunity to do that! Book that time off work! If you can't attend for all the dates listed, please advise WHEN you can attend so that the main events can happen during that time - when most people will be there.

Chad and Trish are putting together some sight seeing opportunities, information about the area, family fun and much more! Please help them with this task by letting them know how many people to expect (even if that is tentative at the moment), when you will arrive/leave and however else they can help you in your planning.

This should be lots of fun and we invite family far and wide to join us for the 2015 Giesbrecht Family Reunion! Please feel free to contact them via this site or the Facebook page.
